David J. Holmes began his career in 1972 in Boston as a rare book dealer with a small stock of autographs.
He would now more accurately be described as an autograph dealer with a small stock of books. Mr. Holmes trades from offices in Hamilton, New York, in central New York State. He is very much a specialist dealing almost entirely in letters, manuscripts, archives and books in the field of 18th through 20th century English and American literature, with an emphasis on the period of 1840 to 1940. Holmes Autographs carries a stock of letters and books written by a broad range of authors from the very famous to the lesser-known.
The firm is especially interested in the latter category and has indeed always been a champion of the so-called minor or neglected writer. In addition, the company occasionally handles original artwork (usually illustrations for literary works), letters of English and American artists and illustrators, photographs of authors, and correspondence by playwrights and theatrical figures (mostly from the period prior to 1940). Sales are divided about equally between private collectors, institutional libraries and other dealers. Holmes Autographs strives to establish long-standing relationships with its customers and has helped build many significant collections. The business is carried out primarily through private quotation and occasional catalogues. The stock may be viewed on the company's website (holmesautographs.com), on the Advanced Book Exchange, and on the ILAB site. Visitors are welcome to examine the inventory on premises, provided an appointment is arranged beforehand, and at the annual New York City PADA Show held in April of each year.
Mr. Holmes is assisted in the business by his daughter, Sarah A. Holmes. David J. Holmes Autographs is also a member of the ABAA and ILAB.
